A Lifelong Partnership: The United Board’s Support for Hwa Nan
The United Board for Christian Higher Education in Asia has been one of the most vital and enduring partners in Hwa Nan Women’s College’s journey, providing support both before and after 1949. As one of 13 Christian colleges in China supported by UB, Hwa Nan benefitted from early funding, laboratory equipment, and rebuilding assistance after the Anti-Japanese War.
After 1951, UB shifted its focus to supporting institutions across Asia but continued its deep relationship with Hwa Nan. Under Dr. Yu Bao Sheng’s leadership, Hwa Nan actively engaged UB in cultivating the next generation of educators. During a time when personnel mobility in China was limited, UB helped send outstanding Hwa Nan graduates abroad for advanced study, ensuring a pipeline of well-trained faculty who would return to serve the college.
Over the next three decades, UB played a transformative role in helping Hwa Nan rebuild its teaching force, funding faculty development, training programs, and leadership exchanges. Regular visits from UB staff and leaders, such as Dr. William P. Penn, Dr. Birgit Linder, and Ms. Anne Ofstedal, provided strategic guidance and sustained partnership. Hwa Nan faculty also participated in international exchange programs and training seminars across the U.S. and Asia, significantly strengthening the college’s institutional capacity.
Beyond funding, UB nurtured a relationship built on shared values, Christian service, cross-cultural understanding, and educational excellence. With UB’s support, Hwa Nan developed a strong, resilient teaching core that successfully transitioned the school into a new era of independence and innovation.
From post-war rebuilding to modern faculty development, the United Board’s unwavering support has helped Hwa Nan thrive, preserving its legacy while preparing it for the future.
